We all need a little help sometimes, and if you’ve adopted a regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet but still aren’t quite seeing the results you’re looking for, gastric bypass may be the extra step needed to reach your goals and live a healthier life.
The idea is simple and straightforward: changes are made to a patient’s digestive system to decrease appetite and portion sizes, thus leading to weight loss.
In the procedure, the patient’s stomach is divided into two sections; a smaller upper section and a larger lower section. The smaller top segment, often called the pouch, is reduced to the size of a walnut, thereby creating a decreased appetite and only allowing for small portion sizes. The bariatric surgeon then connects a small portion of the patients small intestine to the pouch – consumed food will then pass through this new pathway and into the small intestine, and the patient’s body will absorb fewer calories.
In addition to the weight loss benefits, the laparoscopic procedure allows for a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
