Obesity is currently defined as a BMI>30, Severe Obesity as a BMI>35, and Morbid Obesity as a BMI >40. The truth is, obesity of any type is a complex medical condition often associated with many additional medical manifestations other than simply being overweight. These commonly include: diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility and many others. In addition, chronic joint and back pain, depression, chronic fatigue, anxiety, other sleep disorders and sexual dysfunction are also related to this disease. The approach to managing such a complex disease is therefore complex as well. That is a strength of Memorial Weight Loss Center and Memorial Wellness Center: the ability to offer a wide range of treatment options.

Everyone will immediately agree that weight loss is an essential and greatly beneficial treatment of obesity. Individuals will see prompt improvement of the obesity associated conditions, or comorbidities. The question, and big debate, becomes in how do we achieve and maintain this weight loss. We strongly support both nonsurgical, medical weight loss programs, as well as a number of surgical options to include: laparoscopic gastric banding (Lap Band), laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass, and laparoscopic revisional surgery.

By always remembering the complexity of this illness, and keeping multimodality integration in the forefront of our care and treatment, we strive to maximize your outcomes every step of the way. This begins with our comprehensive preoperative evaluation including metabolic and nutritional screening blood work, nutritional evaluation and education, psychological evaluation and education, presurgical medical clearance and presurgical upper GI endoscopy. We strongly emphasize our preoperative education process. Once the decision for surgery is made, we continue our comprehensive approach with our ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Program. We have teamed with our Anesthesia Department to develop an innovative pre-, intra-, and postop management protocol requiring no, or very minimal, opioid medications. By avoiding narcotics, patients are having less nausea, lethargy and drowsiness after surgery. They have been very comfortable and more quickly return to full activity.

And finally, our comprehensive program continues in our postoperative care. We see our patients at 2- and 4-weeks, 3-, 6-, and 12-months in order to closely monitor their progress. We see our patients annually thereafter. Our postoperative monitoring is closely integrated with our Memorial Wellness Center providing the greatest opportunity for long-term success.
